SWANK HEALTHCARE AWARDS LEARNING CHAMPION AT THE HEALTHCARE SERVICE EXCELLENCE CONFERENCE
St. Louis, MO, February 13, 2013 Swank Healthcare was proud to sponsor the HealthCare Service Excellence Conference in New Orleans on January 20-23, 2013. At the conference, Swank HealthCare announced its first Learning Champion Award winner, Dawn Shuman, RN, BSN, MBA. Shuman, a Clinical Instructor at Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina, was presented the Learning Champion award at the conference's ending ceremonies on Wednesday, January 23, 2013.
Nominees of the Learning Champion Award were required to demonstrate outstanding support and advocacy for the use of learning, education and training as a tool for improving the hospital's organizational performance. Shuman was nominated by the Director of Education of Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Trish Deems, BSN, MEd., RN. Beaufort Memorial Hospital is located on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and is the largest hospital between Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC. As a nonprofit hospital, Beaufort offers the expertise of more than 150 board-certified physicians and is a Duke Medicine affiliate in heart and cancer.
As the Clinical Instructor at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, Shuman works with a variety of healthcare learning methodologies, from online to classroom to one-on-one training. Shuman received the Learning Champion Award for her passion and dedication to improving learning processes at Beaufort. Shuman made a big impact on the organization by initiating a new online training system throughout the hospital.
"We firmly believe in providing education resources to our staff members to help them maintain the highest level of competency in their field," Shuman says. "The Swank tool allows us to provide the courses required to support annual mandatory competencies organization-wide, while also offering learning opportunities to any department or staff member, anytime throughout the year."
Shuman's role of a staff education implementer makes a direct impact on patients and families. Swank HealthCare is always looking for ways to give back to educators who help advocate and facilitate education throughout their facilities, and Shuman is an exceptional representation of what it takes to be a Learning Champion.
