Event Idea

Allow students with sensory disorders, autism or any other special needs to enjoy a trip to the movies without the negative stimuli they might experience at a typical theater showing by hosting a sensory-friendly movie screening. Beyond this event, identify ways all future campus movie showings could be more inclusive.

Customer Spotlights

“This past October we collaborated with the Disability Cultural Center on campus to screen ‘Inside Out.’ We showed the movie with captions and ASL interpretation to celebrate Disability Awareness Month. We were able to provide inclusive snacks (GF popcorn and ice cream) and held a discussion afterward. The attendance was incredible (450+) and students left because there was no more room in the venue! We plan on doing this event again with ‘Finding Dory.’”

“We hosted a sensory screening for our students with different abilities so they could bring their family members with them, as well as enjoy the film at their own pace.”

– Westchester Community College

“This event was part of our school’s annual Deaf Awareness Week and was intended to highlight examples of the Deaf community in mainstream media. We provided food and lead a discussion after the movie to discuss our thoughts and how it related to positive representation of the Deaf Community, understanding privileges, and how we can act as better allies. The student engagement was positive! We had a large turnout because both movie nights that we had, ‘A Quiet Place Part I’ & ‘Part II,’ are popular amongst our students. These movie nights were also co-hosted with our student group, Deaf Awareness Club, so they were able to get more publicity about their club activities.”
