Synopsis

This Best Picture is based on Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the rise and fall of a Southern politician who starts out as an honest corruption fighter only to degenerate into a ruthless, unethical demagogue. Broderick Crawford won a Best Actor Oscar as the office holder and Mercedes McCambridge got the nod as Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of his shrewd secretary. Remade in 2006 with Sean Penn as the venal politico.
