Synopsis
This sweeping historical epic of the United States' westward expansion across the North American continent unfolds over 50 years through the lives of four generations of pioneers—using the American West as its canvas—and stars many of Hollywood's greatest, including John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Gregory Peck, James Stewart, Debbie Reynolds, Eli Wallach, Lee J. Cobb, Carolyn Jones and Richard Widmark. From 1839 to 1889, How the West Was Won follows a courageous New England farm family as they travel to the fertile Ohio Valley set against the Louisiana Purchase, the Civil War, buffalo hunters, the Pony Express and the first transcontinental railroad.
