Synopsis

Violin virtuoso Tang Yun gives, appropriately enough, a virtuoso acting performance as a 13-year-old music prodigy who comes of age under the tutelage of a cantankerous instructor (Wang Zhiwen). The film works as a poignant drama and a social study of modern-day China. Chen Kaige costars, co-wrote and directed and cast his wife, Chen Hong, as a glamorous social climber.
