Synopsis

Written by and starring BAFTA Award-winner Michaela Coel (Chewing Gum, Black Earth Rising), I May Destroy You takes an unflinching look at the modern dating landscape and where, in the age of instant gratification, the distinction between sexual liberation and exploitation lies. The series centers on Arabella (Coel), a care-free, self-assured Londoner with a burgeoning writing career, a holiday fling turned aspirational boyfriend in Italy, and great group of friends, including the fun-loving and affectionate Terry (Weruche Opia), who’s struggling to get her acting career off the ground, and Kwame (Paapa Essiedu), an attractive, charming gay fitness instructor with serious self-esteem issues when it comes to getting what he wants in sex and love. Feted as the “voice of her generation,” Arabella is complex, original, and highly talented – but, distracted by the pressures of her first literary triumph, she’s struggling to write her second novel and is in danger of becoming destructive and self-absorbed. When she’s spiked with a date- rape drug, Arabella is forced to reassess every aspect of her life: her career, her friends, and even her family. As Arabella attempts to process her trauma, she begins an often painful, sometimes hilarious journey of radical self- discovery that leads her to some surprising places – and controversial conclusions.
