“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” Catches A+ CinemaScore and a New Record
Sony-Marvel’s latest superhero flick grossed $35.4 million opening weekend and an impressive 97 percent Rotten Tomatoes score.
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” cast a $35.4 million web during its opening weekend – the best December opening for an animated film. It also received an A+ rating from CinemaScore – a first for a Spider-Man film and only the third superhero movie ever to nab the top score.
But audiences aren’t the only ones praising the new Spider-Man film. Critics love the fresh, new take on the comic book classic, with many – including NPR and The Wall Street Journal – calling it the best Spider-Man movie ever created. And if that wasn’t proof enough, the movie also holds a 97 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is up for “Best Animated Feature” at the upcoming Golden Globes.
“[It's] a film that's fantastically fresh, both visually and narratively, trippy and post-modern at the same time and packed with intriguing storytelling tools, humor, empathy and action, while also true to its roots.” Associated Press
Set in the shared “Spider-Verse” where there can be more than one Spider-Man, the film introduces Afro-Latino teen Miles Morales as the newest hero to don a red and blue spidey suit. Alongside Peter Parker, Peter B. Parker, Spider-Woman, Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham and the anime Peni Parker, the many Spider-Men battle villains Kingpin and Doc Ock – the ones responsible for opening the portals into other universes.
The film’s voice cast is comprised of Shameik Moore, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Jake Johnson, Zoë Kravitz, Nicolas Cage, Live Schreiber and more.
“’Spider-Verse’ is a dreamy, funny, self-aware, visually explosive delight…” Vanity Fair
The no. 2 spot at this weekend’s box office went to Warner Bros. and Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule.” Revolving around a 90-year-old broke horticulturalist who gets caught smuggling drugs for the cartel, the crime drama is Eastwood’s first acting credit since 2012.
