Celebrate 60 Years of Paddington!

The world’s most delightful bear is turning 60 this year! Celebrate this monumental moment with a birthday celebration using our ideas below.

It should be noted that Paddington, like the Queen of England, celebrates his birthday twice a year - once on June 25 and again six months later on December 25. But because we’re so excited to ring in his lovable bear’s 60th birthday, we’re suggesting a celebration this June, especially since the newly released, record-breaking sequel is now available.

Decorations
Start your planning process deciding the theme and decorations. We suggest a London theme, complete with umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, British flags and London underground signs everywhere, plus smaller odes to Big Ben and the classic double-decker buses.

Invites
Spread the word about this epic birthday party by creating invitations and flyers. Play off the tag Aunt Lucy attached to Paddington before he left Peru by making them look like old-fashioned luggage tags.

Concessions
The obvious choice is marmalade sandwiches, or sugar cookies with a marmalade spread. Serve apple juice in glass jars to give the appearance of jelly jars. Keep the London theme going with fish and chips or tea and crumpets. Or keep things simple with oranges, gummy bears and teddy bear graham crackers.

Cake
Because this is a birthday celebration, after all, there should be cake. Make it in the shape of some classic brown leather luggage by just adding some detailed elements to a regular sheet cake. Or, if able, add a little Paddington to the top so he can blow out his own candles.

Activities
There are many different ways you can pass the time at your celebration. Our favorite ideas include leading a Paddington-themed storytime featuring a few of Michael Bond’s 150 children’s books, then sharing the newly released, record-breaking sequel. Afterward, lead a discussion with kids about why they love Paddington. Make sure to highlight some of this bighearted-bear’s best qualities, including kindness, generosity, empathy and politeness, so they can learn from his great example.
