‘Aladdin’ Flies to #1 Spot Memorial Day Weekend

Grossing over $112 million during its four-day debut, this live-action reboot was a win at the box office and with audiences nationwide.

Disney’s live-action reboot of the 1992 animated film earned the top spot at the Memorial Day Weekend box office – grossing $112.7 million domestically and $207 million globally during the four-day weekend. Even more impressive, Disney can now say it’s responsible for the top three highest-grossing openings of 2019 so far. Marvel blockbusters “Captain Marvel” ($153.4 million) and “Avengers: Endgame” ($357.1 million) claim the first two spots.

The musical adventure was directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Will Smith as the Genie, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine. SNL alum Nasim Pedrad, Marwan Kenzari and Billy Magnussen also star.

Not only was the film a success at the box office, but audiences left praising the new Disney classic. The verified Rotten Tomatoes audience score is currently at 94 percent with over 17,672 verified ratings and holds an “A” CinemaScore.

‘John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum’ took second place at the box office in its second weekend of release. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ came in third place, grossing more than $17 million in its fifth weekend – helping it cross the $800 million domestic threshold. New additions to the theaters included Sony’s “Brightburn” and Annapurna’s “Booksmart.”

But this film doesn’t mark the end of Disney’s summer reign. “Toy Story 4” premieres in theaters June 21, followed by “The Lion King” on July 19.
