‘MIB: International’ Zaps to First Place
Starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson as Agents H and M, the latest installment in the “Men in Black” franchise earned $100 million globally and has been labeled a “bright and breezy spin-off.”
Leading both the domestic and global box office this weekend was the latest installment of the popular sci-fi action franchise: “Men in Black” International.” Featuring an all-star cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Emma Thompson, Rebecca Ferguson, and Kumail Nanjiani, the reboot earned a global total of more than $100 million.
Twenty-two years after Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones first popularized the film, the Men in Black have gone global and now face their biggest threat yet: a mole within the organization. But this time, it’s up to Agents M (Tessa Thompson) and H (Chris Hemsworth) to set off on a globe-trotting adventure to save the organization and the world from the “scum of the universe’s” destructive plans.
“Seven years after "Men in Black 3" hit the big screen, the franchise is back with a new cast and the playfulness that made the original with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones such a hit.” Business Insider
Luckily for the audience, the duo has amazing comedic chemistry while carrying out their mission – although that should come as no surprise since this marks their second shared blockbuster following 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.” But this time it’s Tessa who’s receiving the heavier load of praise with Beyond the Trailer writing, “Hemsworth shines but Tessa Thompson's the revelation, breaking new ground when it comes to women of color in Hollywood blockbusters!”
“Men in Black” wasn’t the only reboot at the box office this weekend, however. A new generation was introduced to Shaft with Warner Bros.’ third installment reconnecting three generations of John Shafts. Directed by Tim Story, “Shaft” reprises Samuel L. Jackson’s role from almost 20 years ago, alongside Jessie T, Usher and Richard Roundtree as his son and father. And while the film didn’t take home the top spot at the box office, it’s “A” CinemaScore means it was a win for audiences.
”Coupled with some very ingenious early twists and some wonderfully-visualized action sequences, it's fun getting to know agents H and M.” Moviehole
Other releases this weekend included Amazon Studios’ “Late Night,” starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson, as well as indie zombie film “The Dead Don’t Die,” which featured a star-studded cast led by Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevigny and Selena Gomez.
