‘Annabelle Comes Home’ to Best New Release Opening

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema delivered another win at the box office with its Conjuring Universe horror film franchise. “Annabelle Comes Home,” the seventh installment in the series that began back in 2013 and the third “Annabelle” film, earned $31.2 million domestically since it first launched in theaters – a big win for a film with a low production budget. Overseas, the horror film opened with $45 million in sales. Gary Dauberman wrote and directed the film starring Patrick Wilson, Vera Farmiga and McKenna Grace.

As far as the film’s reception goes, it received a 70 percent Tomatometer score from critics and a 71 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Portland Press Herald even wrote the “Annabelle Comes Home,” “could be the best in the trilogy,” while Globe and Mail said the film focuses on “excellent, uncomplicated and well-wrought house-of-horrors fun, complete with a message about self-blame and the real things that haunt us.”

While the main series follows real-life cases of Ed and Lorraine Warren, paranormal investigators who worked to assist people possessed or haunted by demonic spirits, the spin-off series focuses on the origins of some of the entities encountered by the Warrens’. This specific film is the story of what happens when the evil doll – which is locked up inside the Warrens’ house – awakens other evil spirits and terrorizes the couple’s ten-year-old daughter and her friends over the course of one terrifying night.

“Annabelle Comes Home” attracted a diverse, younger audience, with PostTrak recording 70 percent of the audience was between the ages of 18 and 34. The Conjuring Universe is the second highest-grossing horror film franchise of all time, grossing more than $1.7 billion worldwide.
