‘Frozen II’ Earns Third-Highest Animated Opening of All Time

Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven return for the sequel to 2013’s pop-culture phenomenon. The film grossed more than $350 million globally during its first three days in theaters.

Six years after “Frozen” first snowed-in records, “Frozen II” is here to bury even more. Not only is it the highest-grossing debut ever for any animated film globally, it’s also the largest opening for any Walt Disney Animation release and marks a new North American high for an animated movie released outside of the summer season. It’s expected to be the sixth Disney film to cross $1 billion globally this year.

Picking up shortly after the events of 2013’s Oscar-winning original, Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Sven and Kristoff once again leave Arendelle to visit an ancient, enchanted forest in their quest to find the origin of Elsa’s magical powers and save their cherished kingdom.

“Bigger, bolder and more epic.” EMPIRE

CNN wrote in its review, “Sisterhood and literal girl power fueled ‘Frozen's’ plot and the same is true of ‘Frozen II’… While the Elsa in ‘Frozen II’ has much better control of her powers, there is something fundamentally missing for her, an understanding as to why she is so different -- and that keeps her from embracing her difference as a gift. Elsa's journey through the film reminds us that we are capable of saving ourselves.”

The film as a whole provides a blizzard of positive messages about sisterhood, empowerment, acceptance, tolerance, perseverance, true love and change.

Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff reprised their voice roles, while Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown joined the cast of characters. The film is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and has a 93 percent Audience Score.

“Frozen II” is in theaters now and available from Swank next spring.
