New York Town Draws Large Crowds with Family Movie Series
The Town of Oyster Bay consistently finds success with their annual Family Movies by Moonlight program by featuring hit new releases, throwback favorites and exciting pre-show activities. Learn more below.
For years, the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York has shown free family-friendly films in its parks and beaches to provide the community with engaging and entertaining summer programming. Titled Family Movies by Moonlight, the event’s organizers start planning each year by contacting their Swank rep to select films. “We love working with Swank!” shared Krista Fileccia-Hardman, who works in the town’s Cultural & Performing Arts Division. “[Swank] makes the first step of planning our family movie nights seamless!” For their 2019 programming, Oyster Bay showed a selection of new release favorites including “Mary Poppins Returns,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “The Incredibles 2” as well as classic favorites “Beauty & the Beast” and “Back to the Future.”
The town consistently achieves great success with their movie program, likely – in no small part – because of the amazing activities they always include before each event. “We had a DeLorean car for people to sit in at our “Back to the Future” event, and a special appearance from “Candy Racer Girl” for “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” shared Fileccia-Hardman. And when they showed “Moana” a few years back, they had a luau inspired dance performance before the show.

In addition to big add-ons, the movie nights also include inflatables, face painting, fun games and free popcorn to make for extra-special summer nights. And each showing takes place at a different location to spotlight a variety of the amazing parks Oyster Bay offers.
To promote their series, the event’s organizers reach out to a number of local websites, magazines, and blogs and always highlight upcoming showings on their social media accounts. Most importantly, they make it a full-page feature in the town’s annual Summer Fun Guide. And to maximize sponsorship opportunities, sponsor’s logos can be found on all the flyers and ads for the event.
