How to Enhance Your Drive-In Movie Event!

Bring the heyday of cinema to your community with these tips for creating entertaining, engaging and safe drive-in movie events.

Drive-in movies date back to June of 1933 when residents of Camden, New Jersey enjoyed a film on the silver screen beneath a blanket of stars. The events peaked in the 1950s when there were more than 4,000 drive-in theaters across the United States. Today, there are few left. However, due to COVID-19 and the nature of drive-in events as a safe option for social distancing, many new theaters and events have popped up across the country. Find our top tips for creating a safe and entertaining drive-in experience in your community below.

Incentivize Your Event

Drive-in theaters will always be a great option for a night out or family-friendly activity because of how luxurious and nostalgic they feel. Make sure to play off these wistful emotions in your promotions and amenities by using retro fonts and imagery, serving up popular foods from the 1950s and playing classic films every generation can appreciate. And be sure to always spotlight the added benefits a drive-in venue provides, like the ability to bring the family dog along or save money by packing your own concessions.

To always make sure the event is worth the trip, consider showing double features instead of just one film. Plus, the outdoor setting of a drive-in event means you can pair the films with other activities to further entice attendance. Try partnering with your local farmer’s market to host a pre-show shopping option, or bring in food trucks, flea markets and craft fairs.

Add Extra Entertainment

Boost the entertainment factor with pre-show, post-show or during-the-show activities! Recruit local bands to perform before the show or offer a unique experience by having a relevant group perform their own music alongside the film while it’s muted. You could apply the same concept to a local dance troupe or cultural club, having them perform during dance numbers. Keep the entertaining moments rolling by hiring a comedian to dish out some humor as people patiently wait to exit the venue, or, if you’re showing a double feature, keep everyone entertained between films by screening classic cartoons or local ads.

Keep Everyone Safe

A few precautionary steps help guarantee everyone’s safety at your drive-in. Ensure everyone can easily view the screen – and maintain at least six feet of social distance – by creating properly spaced demarcation lines so people know where to park. Make sure people understand they can sit on top of their vehicles, but the side of their car should be kept clear. As they buy their tickets at the entrance, give everyone a plastic or trash bag so they can simply leave their trash in their spot instead of walking to a trash can at the end of the event.

For restroom breaks, make sure to add clear signage around spacing and traffic flow for the bathroom. Looking for party favors or giveaways? Consider hand wipes, sanitizer and bug spray.
