‘Let Him Go’ Earns Highest Box Office Opening in Six Weeks

“Let Him Go” was the weekend’s box-office champion, earning $4.1 million and debuting at no. 1 in North America. It was the best domestic opening for a film in six weeks as the movie and theater industry continues to deal with challenges brought forth by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the R-rated modern-day western, Kevin Costner plays a retired sheriff married to Diane Lane. When their son suddenly dies, the couple races from their Montana ranch to rescue their young grandson from a dangerous family living off-the-grid in the Dakotas. When the family makes clear they have no intention of letting their grandson go, the couple have no choice but to fight to get him back.

“Succeeds both as a low-key character study and as a breathlessly intense thriller about the clash between good (but not perfect) people and bad people, none of whom are to be trifled with.” TheWrap

The film also stars Lesley Manville, Kayley Carter, Jeffrey Donavan and Booboo Stewart. The cast received loads of praise, with CNN writing: “Ultimately, the real firepower resides in the performances, from the palpable sense of menace Manville projects to the simple devotion and tenderness that Lane and Costner exhibit toward the boy and each other.”

The Focus Feature film’s top place performance also marks the first time Focus has had two titles open at no. 1 on back-to-back weekends, with horror film “Come Play” premiering Halloween weekend. "[We're] excited to see audiences coming back to theaters," Lisa Bunnell, president of distribution at Focus, said, per the AP. The specialty studios; parent company Universal will likely continue its lead at the box office with new releases the next two weekends: “Freaky” and “Croods: New Age.”

The film has a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score.
