Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars have new movies at the box office. Learn more about the action, thrillers, comedies and horror films coming to Swank soon.
Idris Elba is currently dominating the box office. The British actor can currently be seen starring in the survival film “Beast,” a nerve-racking thriller about a father and his two teenage daughters who find themselves hunted by a giant lion intent on proving his dominance in the savannah. The Universal film earned $11.6 million at the U.S. box office during it’s opening weekend.
If you’ve already seen “Beast,” you can see Idris Elba again this weekend in his new film “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” alongside Tilda Swinton. The film was directed by George Miller, the director of “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
Brad Pitt made his return to the big screen a few weeks ago in the David Leitch-directed “Bullet Train.” Currently holding third place at the box office, the film has grossed a total of $69 million in the U.S. Globally, the action-comedy flick earned $150 million. The Sony film follows five assassins aboard a fast-moving Japanese bullet train – all with connected, yet conflicting, objectives. The film also stars Sandra Bullock, Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Bad Bunny and Andrew Koji.
Indie film “Bodies Bodies Bodies” also landed in the top ten for the weekend box office. The A24 horror film is the second-biggest film for the indie distributor, behind only the arthouse smash-hit “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” The Gen-Z driven cast includes Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Pete Davidson, Rachel Sennott and Chase Sui Wonders.
For wider audiences, Disney and Marvel’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” has crossed the $700 million mark at the global box office. Starring Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman, the fourth film in the franchise sees Thor enlisting the help of Valkyrie, Korg and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster to fight Gorr the God Butcher, who is intent on making all gods extinct.
Paramount’s “Orphan: First Kill” had a limited release over the weekend. The horror film is a prequel to the 2009 cult classic film. Collider wrote in its review: “’Orphan’ is most well-known for its insanely memorable twist and, while this prequel doesn’t top what was done in that film, it presents another satisfyingly crazy twist that will make you sick to your stomach… This prequel embraced the fun campy nature of the original, doubled the body count with some great sequences of suspense, and it chillingly recontextualizes the events of ‘Orphan.’ However, the icing on this sweet horror cake is Isabelle Fuhrman who once again gives another jaw-dropping and scary performance as Esther.”
And for the thrill-seekers, Lionsgate’s movie “Fall” is sure to satisfy. The film follows recent widow Becky and her daredevil YouTuber best friend Hunter as they attempt to climb a 2,000-foot decommissioned TV tower in the middle of nowhere. However, once they get to the top they find themselves trapped when the ladder suddenly collapses. Their cells don’t work, they have no water, no way down and no way to get help.
