Celebrate National Night Out with Movie Programming!

This summer, don’t forget to celebrate National Night Out! National Night Out is an annual nationwide community-building event that brings police and neighbors together to build camaraderie and reinvigorate a true sense of community. Its core focus is on making neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live. Below you’ll find some of our top programming ideas to go along with relevant films and new releases.

Paw Patrol
Before the film, highlight the friendships, and great work, of your local police departments’ K-9 unit by introducing everyone to the dogs and their handlers who work together to keep your community safe.

Kung Fu Panda 4
Team up with your local police department to celebrate local heroes in your community before the show – whomever they might be! Afterward, have free face painting so kids can transform into their own heroes before the movie.

Zootopia
Before your screening of this blockbuster hit movie, see if younger attendees have what it takes to become a police officer – just like Judy Hopps – with an agility obstacle course. Activity ideas include a climbing wall, sprints, hurdles, low crawls and tire races.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
To be a firefighter or police officer, you have to pass a physical abilities test. See if kids in the community can channel these everyday heroes in a pre-show one-mile fun run. You could even help out veterans or injured service members by making it sponsorship-based in order to benefit a local charity.

Trolls Band Together
Help create some magic in your community by recruiting residents to help beautify a common area of your city or park! Having residents work alongside public service members is a great way to enhance relationships – and a great way to get kids outdoors! Afterwards, reward all their hard work with a BBQ and movie showing!

Planes: Fire & Rescue
To a kid, nothing is quite as cool as a real-life firetruck. Partner with your city’s fire department to host truck tours and fireman drill demonstrations before your screening! If your community has a junior fire department, recruit volunteers at the event and be sure to share information on fire safety as well.

Rock Dog 2: Rock Around the Park
Host a Battle of the Bands contest before the movie to showcase the great musical talent of your community. Invite anyone to come up and share their skills on the night of the event, then utilize a digital voting service to let the audience decide the winner. DVD copies of the movie make great prizes!

Wonka
Help strengthen family bonds at your event – whatever that means to attendees – with a Family Tournament. Host challenges like Tug of War, water balloon toss and scavenger hunts to get loved ones working together in order to win!
