‘Civil War’ Declared Victorious in Weekend Box Office

America is at war with itself with this dystopian action film. Learn more below.

New dystopian thriller "Civil War" stormed the box office, taking the No. 1 spot with a history-making $25.7 million opening weekend for A24. That's a huge win for the studio and a testament to the film's power to captivate audiences.

Directed by the visionary Alex Garland ("Ex Machina," "Annihilation"), "Civil War" takes viewers on a heart-pounding journey inside a fractured America through the lens of seasoned photojournalist Lee Smith, played by Kirsten Dunst. Alongside South American-born reporter Joel, portrayed by Wagner Moura, Lee navigates a war-torn landscape under the authoritarian rule of a three-term president (played by Nick Offerman). The cast also stars Jesse Plemons, Stephen Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno and Cailee Spaeny.

But "Civil War" isn't just about action and suspense. It's a film that sparks conversation. While the story revolves around political collapse and society breakdown, it transcends partisan divides. Instead of being confined by red state/blue state rhetoric, “Civil War” offers a chilling portrayal of a nation grappling with the consequences of unchecked authority. Woven throughout we also see the emotional and psychological impact the main characters experience balancing journalistic integrity, compassion for their fellow man and an inherent drive for self-preservation under extreme circumstances.

The movie boasts an impressive 83% "Certified Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers praised the film's ability to explore the chilling consequences of societal breakdown, all while avoiding predictable political clichés. As Vox puts it, "Once you understand that 'Civil War' isn't about what you think, you can appreciate it for what it actually is: a searing meditation on what happens when political orders collapse and violence takes on a sinister logic of its own."

Whether you're a fan of dystopian thrillers, political intrigue or simply powerful filmmaking, "Civil War" is a must-see. With its intense action sequences, stellar performances and thought-provoking themes, Forbes sums it up perfectly: "'Civil War' is a powerful, thought-provoking movie punctuated by intense moments of violence and dread, and one you should go see on the biggest screen possible."
