‘Inside Out 2’ Earns Biggest Opening of 2024
Emotions and expectations were high for the sequel to the 2015 film, but "Inside Out 2" certainly gave audiences – and box offices – a dose of joy.
Audiences came in droves over the weekend to see the new emotions of Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” at play, catapulting the film to $155 million in domestic ticket sales and $295 million globally Not only does this mean “Inside Out 2” had the highest-grossing opening weekend of the year, but it’s also the second-highest animation opening ever.
Amy Poehler returns as the guiding voice of Joy, but she is now joined by a gaggle of new, more complex emotions. Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) and Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos) infiltrate headquarters as Riley begins to navigate her teenage years. What ensues is a charming scuffle between Riley's inner emotions and the daunting outside world, a journey that is striking emotional chords with young and old viewers alike.

The acclaimed vocal cast is rounded out by Phyllis Smith, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira and Lewis Black, who create a vivid and varied world in Riley's mind. The film poignantly tackles all the mental gymnastics of growing up, with The Guardian hailing it as "inventive and moving" while Rolling Stone claims “Pixar brings us all the feels, all the time.” With a 91 percent Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score and an A CinemaScore, it's clear that a story so human is bound to make audiences catch feelings of their own.
