“Twisters” Blows Audiences Away
Learn more about the film below.
The box office cooked up quite the storm this past weekend with the release of “Twisters,” a standalone sequel to 1996’s “Twister.” Shaping up to be one of the top movies of the summer, the new Universal release earned $80.5 million in the domestic box office. This success puts it in third place for 2024 opening weekends so far, landing just behind “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Globally, box office numbers have reached $123.2 million, but the most notable surge occurred in the Midwest, where the plot was evocative of reality for tornado-alley audiences.
“Twisters,” though based on 1996’s “Twister,” provides a fresh take, perfect for both new viewers and fans of the original. The movie follows Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones), a meteorologist who, after a traumatic tornado experience in her college years, has now retreated to New York to study tornadoes from a distance. Her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos), requests that she return to Oklahoma to help his team test a new tornado-tracking system. She agrees reluctantly, and her apprehension grows when she must work with storm-chasing Internet influencer Tyler Owens (Glen Powell). Amid a dangerous tornado season, the team must band together to face fears, conquer storms and save the community.
“'Twisters’ deserves at least a half dozen Oscar nominations.” Parade
The movie marks another major release for Glen Powell, who has become a Hollywood favorite in the past year with roles in “Anyone But You” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” Joining Powell are Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton and a cameo appearance by James Paxton, the son of original “Twister” star Bill Paxton. Adding to the film’s popularity is a well-crafted country album, featuring original tunes by Luke Combs, Jelly Roll, Miranda Lambert, Shania Twain and more. An action film with a country soundtrack is proving to be one-of-a-kind, with CinemaScore giving the film an A-, and Rotten Tomatoes audiences scoring it at 92 percent. With gripping adventure sequences and impressive special effects, “Twisters” is spinning its way toward blockbuster status.
“Twisters” is playing in theaters now and will be available for licensing from Swank soon.
