“Kraven the Hunter,” the latest entry in Sony’s “Spider-Man” Universe (SSU), was the top new release at the weekend box office. The action-packed sci-fi film, which earned an 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, showcases the gritty origin story of Marvel’s notorious anti-hero Sergei Kravinoff. With a runtime just over two hours, the R-rated thriller has been praised for its violent intensity, compelling characters and chaotic fun.
Directed by J.C. Chandor and based on a story by Richard Wenk, “Kraven the Hunter” stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the titular role, supported by a stellar cast that includes Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger and Alessandro Nivola. The film marks Sony’s third “Spider-Man”-adjacent adaptation this year, following “Venom: The Last Dance” and “Madame Web.” Produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment, it’s the sixth installment in Sony’s expanding SSU.

The film delves into the complex past of Sergei Kravinoff, exploring his fractured relationship with his crime lord father (played by Russell Crowe) and his evolution into the feared hunter known as Kraven.
