‘Superman’ Flies High with $217 Million Global Debut

Warner Bros.’ “Superman” reboot launches the studio’s new cinematic era with a $217 million global opening and glowing reviews for its hopeful take on the beloved superhero.

Warner Bros.’ “Superman” reboot took flight this weekend, bringing in $122 million domestically and reaching $217 million globally in its opening frame. Backed by DC Studios, the film launched to an 82 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and a glowing 93 percent audience rating, along with an “A-“ CinemaScore –  marking a win for the franchise and a promising start to the studio’s cinematic refresh.

Directed by James Gunn and produced by Gunn and Peter Safran, the 129-minute PG-13 feature introduces a new era for the Man of Steel. The film stars David Corenswet in his breakout role as Clark Kent/Superman, joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. The ensemble also includes Milly Alcock, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi and Bradley Cooper.

At its core, “Superman” is a story about the enduring value of hope. While staying true to the hero’s classic ideals of “truth, justice and the American way,” the film reflects modern sensibilities, emphasizing optimism, compassion and the belief in humanity’s better nature. Corenswet’s portrayal of a morally centered Superman breathes new life into the character, offering audiences a balance of thrilling action and emotional resonance.

“Easily the best 'Superman' movie made in my lifetime.” Screen Crush

The film’s success is not only commercial—critics are also rallying behind it. Screen Rant praised it as “the perfect summer blockbuster,” writing, “Gunn has managed to take a well-known, beloved character and give him a refreshingly original story that stays true to its roots.” NPR echoed the enthusiasm: “It makes you want to cheer.”

TheWrap praised Gunn for the reboot, saying: “James Gunn tried to make a great Superman movie, one that embraces the wonder of the character as an action hero and a moral paragon, which derives its drama from how people react to his faith in us. He succeeded.”

“Superman” is playing in theaters now and will be available for licensing from Swank soon.
