Festive Fun for Every Age Group This Halloween

This Halloween, don’t just show a movie – create an unforgettable experience for patrons of all ages. Here are simple ways to take your event beyond the screen:

Programming for Kids

  • Offer a mini costume parade before the film with small prizes for everyone – nothing competitive, just fun recognition for creativity.
  • Set up a “sensory spooky box” station where kids reach into mystery containers filled with peeled grapes (eyeballs!), cooked spaghetti (brains!) and more.
  • Lead a quick craft session where kids can make their own Halloween masks or no-carve pumpkin faces to wear during the screening.

Programming for Teens

  • Host a glow-in-the-dark dance or scavenger hunt in a darkened area of the library right before the movie.
  • Encourage creative expression with a 10-minute “flash fiction” contest – have teens write their spookiest story on the spot and share aloud before the show.
  • Set out old or discarded book jackets and craft supplies, then invite teens to redesign the cover of a spooky story or thriller with their own twisted title and art. Display the results during the event or vote on favorites.

Programming for Adults

  • Set up a mini “Horror Book to Film” display for pre-movie browsing or post-screening checkout.
  • Before the movie, turn down the lights and run a few rounds of spooky trivia using flashlights for buzzing in. Keep it fun and light – with small fall-themed prizes like candy corn or bookmarks.
  • Play brief soundbites from iconic horror films before the screening – then let patrons guess the title for a prize.
