Fences
Viola Davis made an impassioned speech after winning “Best Supporting Actress” – making her the first black actor to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony. Denzel Washington, who also directed this adaptation of August Wilson's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, lost his “Best Actor” nomination. But #GaryfromChicago is still a big fan.
Jungle Book
This reimagined classic took home the “Best Visual Effects” award for its computer-generated jungle and many animal species that “walk like you [and] talk like you, too.” The challenging CGI photorealism took more than 800 artists and technologists to create.
La La Land
Even though “La La Land” didn’t win “Best Picture,” the musical love story was still a big winner with a total of six awards, including “Best Actress,” “Best Cinematography,” “Best Original Score” and “Best Director” – making Damien Chazelle the youngest director to win the award.
Hacksaw Ridge
This Mel Gibson directed war film won for both sound mixing and film editing. But the truly remarkable, and historic, achievement was soundman Kevin O’Connell finally ending his 20 non-win losing streak, an Oscar’s record. He responded with a touching thank-you speech addressed to his late mother who got him his first job in the industry 29 years ago.
Moonlight
“Moonlight” won the night’s most coveted award and Mahershala Ali, the“Best Supporting Actor” winner, became the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar®. This story of human self-discovery also took home the “Best Adapted Screenplay” prize.
Manchester by the Sea
Casey Affleck won “Best Actor” for his portrayal of a man who comes out of grief-stricken solitude after his brother’s death. The Amazon Studios film also took home the “Best Original Screenplay” prize.
Zootopia
With an anti-discrimination and pro-tolerance message, “Zootopia” reigned supreme in the animation category by taking home the “Best Animated Feature” award.
The Salesman
The Iranian drama film won “Best Foreign Language Film,” for its story of a married couple whose relationship struggles after a traumatic event.
Arrival
Denis Villeneuve's sci-fi drama “Arrival” took home the Oscar for “Best Sound Editing.”
Suicide Squad
The "super-antihero" film won for best makeup and hair styling, raising the stakes for its pending sequel.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Three-time Oscar winner Colleen Atwood won “Best Costume Design” for her work on this Harry Potter spin-off film. Vanity Fair previously spoke on her designs for the film saying, “…she was able to merge areas of sartorial expertise – creating period-correct 1920s wardrobes, but with whimsical touches for the wizards wearing them.”
