Synopsis

A provocative new HBO limited drama series, Years and Years follows members of a more-or-less typical British family, the Lyons, who converge on one crucial night in 2019. Over the next 15 years, as Britain is rocked by a flurry of unstable political, economic and technological advances, the twists and turns of the Lyons’ everyday lives are explored as we find out if this ordinary Manchester family can change the world. With each episode propelling a year or two ahead, the Lyons – siblings Stephen (Rory Kinnear), Edith (Jessica Hynes), Daniel (Russell Tovey) and Rosie (Ruth Madeley), their grandmother Muriel (Anne Reid), and their respective spouses and children – will experience all the hopes and fears of an unknowable future. They’ll fall in and out of love, grow old, fall apart and come back together, while constantly looking forward. The series is set against the backdrop of a world in which no one can tell political right from left – as evidenced in the rise to power of Vivienne Rook (Emma Thompson), an entrepreneur whose say-anything style makes her as appealing as she is controversial. Full of wit, warmth, and hope, Years and Years is ultimately about family, showing the relatable struggles to survive the day-to-day as society changes faster than ever before. Years and Years was created and written by Russell T. Davies, whose impressive body of work includes Queer as Folk, The Second Coming, and the 2005 revival of Doctor Who.
