Synopsis

From acclaimed writer/director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) comes I Know This Much Is True, a six-part limited drama series starring Mark Ruffalo (Emmy® winner for HBO’s The Normal Heart) as identical twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey and follows their parallel lives in an epic story of betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness. Opening in their present day (1990) with both brothers approaching middle-age, the series chronicles Dominick and Thomas at different stages in their lives through flashbacks to their formative years. Dominick works as a housepainter and lives a fairly spartan existence, but after the death of their mother, Dominick’s role as Thomas’ protector and caretaker reaches a critical inflection point when Thomas – who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia – stages a frightening act of self-harm in protest of the Iraq War. Expanding from this crisis point, the series follows Dominick as he tries to save his brother in the wake of his institutionalization – and as he slowly begins to uncover his family’s tragic history.
