How The Suffolk Theater
Turns Movies Into Experiences

At The Suffolk Theater in Long Island, Director Gary Hygom uses movie programming as more than filler between live events – it’s a way to attract new audiences, strengthen community connection and create experiences patrons can’t get at home.

From sing-along screenings to themed food pairings like Moroccan cuisine before “Casablanca,” The Suffolk Theater has found that interactive elements help audiences engage more deeply with both the film and the venue itself. “If I’m showing a musical, it will introduce people to some of the music programming I have,” Gary explains. “It diversifies your audience. It diversifies your programming.

For Gary, film programming also helps turn casual attendees into returning patrons by giving them a shared experience that feels special and communal. “People want an experience in that theater,” he says. “It brings people together to experience something together and not alone.
